Scientific Program The 2011 Biennial Meeting of ARP will be held June 16-18 in Riverside, California. The ARP stand-alone meeting held in Evanston in 2009 was the first major scientific conference in the United States solely dedicated to personality psychology. This second biennial meeting will continue to establish ARP as the most important venue to present and to hear about current personality research. The scientific program will include more than a dozen symposia on a wide variety of topics, along with addresses by the two most recent winners of the Tanaka award, presentations by "rising stars" of personality psychology, and a personality psychology "data blitz." It will also include a presidential address and more than 100 poster presentations. Best of all, ARP is the place to see first-hand and to meet the scientists who are doing the most important research in personality. To view the program (in pdf format), click here.
Meeting Location and Format Riverside is one of the old cities of southern California with distinctive history and architecture including the spectacular Mission Inn. Come early or stay late, and bring the family. Nearby attractions include the beaches, the desert and, of course, Disneyland (see links below). Riverside can be quite warm in June but the area also often experiences "June gloom" with a fog that does not lift until mid-day and leads to relatively cool afternoons. Bring a sweater, just in case.
The conference begins with an optional workshop on the computer package "R" on Thursday afternoon (the 16th), followed by a reception for everyone at 6 pm that evening. The scientific program runs all day on Friday and Saturday and concludes with an optional, gala dinner on Saturday night (the 18th). In addition to access to the scientific program, the registration fee includes receptions, continental breakfast and buffet lunch Friday and Saturday, and coffee breaks both days.
Optional R Workshop Some people say that R, a free, open-source suite of software facilities, is the wave of the future for psychological data analysis. Its flexibility, transparency, and range of functions make it particularly suitable for personality research. This workshop, co-taught by William Revelle of Northwestern University and Ryne Sherman of UC Riverside, will introduce R for personality researchers. It assumes no prior knowledge of R and will emphasize standard functions for analysis and display of experimental and correlational data for classroom and research. Demonstrations of R's power will include graphical displays for exploratory data analysis, factor and cluster analysis for scale analysis, scale construction including IRT and classic test theory approaches, structural equation modeling, and multilevel modeling. The workshop will be held on Thursday, June 16 from 1-5 pm. Capacity is limited. Update: If you are registered for this course, please see Bill Revelle's letter here.
Optional Gala Dinner An optional gala dinner on Saturday evening will be held at the beautiful Mission Inn. The additional fee includes dinner and a glass of wine, and the dinner will be held in one of the Inn's historic private rooms. Vegetarian options will be available. Space is strictly limited so sign up early!

Hotels
The Marriott is a modern high-rise hotel across the street from the convention center. The Mission Inn is an historic, showplace hotel just 2 blocks away. Both hotels are offering extremely favorable rates, which include free parking, free transportation to and from Ontario Airport (call for an appointment), and free internet.
$119 a night, plus tax, including parking, internet, and airport transportation (Ontario only). Upgraded rooms and suites from $129. For reservations, call direct 951-784-0300 or 800-843-7755 and specify "Association for Research in Personality." (Note: The convention rate is no longer available on-line; please call.)
$99 a night, plus tax, including parking, internet, and airport transportation (Ontario only). For reservations, call direct 951-784-8000, and specify "Association for Research in Personality." (This rate is not available on the internet or via the Marriott national reservations number.)
Airport Transportation
Ontario International Airport is only 15 miles from downtown Riverside. To arrange free airport transportation: If you are staying at the Mission Inn, call Guest Services at 951-784-0300 at least 24 hours before arrival. If you are staying at the Marriott, call 951-784-8000 at least 72 hours before arrival.
Los Angeles International Aiport is about 1.5 hours away (potentially longer at heavy traffic times -- rush hour is away from Riverside in the morning and towards Riverside in the afternoon and early evening). A car rental may be a good option because the hotels both offer free parking as part of the convention rate. A shuttle service is another option. We recommend a service that charges per van rather than per person, because you will get individual service and can divide the cost across riders if you organize a small group. Cost is about $130-$150 each way for a van that seats 5-7 persons; roundtrip is slightly less. You can book online (click on the name of the service) at NOTE: These are listed for convenience only and ARP is not affiliated with or responsible for either company. For many more options google "Los Angeles Airport Transportation."
